Joe attended The Sir John Cass College, School of Art and Crafts in London from 1968-1969. After his studies, Joe worked at G Music and Sons, Hatton Garden, London, for five years. Here he completed an apprenticeship in diamond mounting.
In 1975, Joe spent a year working for the prestigious Cartier, in Bond Street, London. At the time Cartier was still a family run business with shops in London, Paris and New York. While here, Joe made several prestige pieces for Cartier including a piece made jointly by a number of the workers, which was valued at $1.3 million pounds at the time.
Following this, Joe worked for Danish Jeweller Kjelt Jacobsen for five years, who imported Danish Silver into London. In this position, Joe made a pair of earrings for the famous opera singer Dame Kiri Janette Te Kanawa.
In 1981, Joe moved to Bath and was self-employed working with Mike Taylor of Taylor’s Jewellers for three years.
Joe moved to Adelaide, Australia in 1983, buying a workshop from an established retail jeweller, and employing several trained jewellers. Here he manufactured jewellery for a number of prominent jewellers, including an award winning choker design for De Beers Diamonds International Award, which was designed by Meg Benbow in 1988.
